JEWELL’S JEMS: INSIDE THE CONNECTION BETWEEN DENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS

What’s going on in your mouth can tell you a lot more than you might think about your overall wellness.

On Sunday’s edition of Jewell’s Jems on the WGN Weekend Morning News, Audree Lee shared insight into the connection between oral care and the rest of the body.

“We eat with our mouths, which sends signals to our stomach, which sends signals to our cells, but we don’t think anything about the mouth because nobody’s really explained it,” she said. “If you don’t have good teeth or a good mouth environment, it could cause some severe things.”

She also discussed different types of dental care, saying a biological dentist differs from a regular dentist. She described it as a more holistic approach that looks at the body as a whole to better understand what may be going on.

“My husband had an issue. It started with an uncontrollable nose bleed, and we didn’t know where it came from. We went to (the biological dentist) and they did a CT scan of the whole mouth, which is connected to the brain — the head and mouth are connected, people don’t think about that. What he saw was an entrance of a sinus infection from a tooth that was causing the nose to bleed because of the pressure, causing his elevated high blood pressure and could’ve caused a heart attack or stroke,” Lee said.

Lee said symptoms in the teeth can be linked to a range of health issues, including obesity, high blood pressure, strokes, depression and mental health conditions.

“Everything that the body experiences, the teeth know about it, so we need to make sure we check it,” Lee said.

Lee will host a Zoom class on Monday at 7 p.m. titled “What’s Going on with My Mouth.”
