STATEMENT ISSUED AFTER INCREASED SHARK ACTIVITY OBSERVED IN CAROLINA BEACH SURF

CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. (WECT) - The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a coastal hazard statement due to increased activity of sharks near Carolina Beach.

According to the NWS, the statement was issued after Carolina Beach Ocean Rescue reported multiple shark sightings Monday afternoon.

In addition to the increased shark activity, there is also a high risk of rip currents.

NWS says dangerous rip currents are expected and the warning will remain in effect until 8 p.m. on July 7.

“Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water,” NWS stated. “Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don`t swim against the current. If possible, swim in a direction parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.”
